  5. Ribosomal protein S13 is one of the proteins from the small ribosomal subunit.
  6. In Escherichia  coli,  S13  is  known to be involved in binding fMet-tRNA and,
  7. hence, in  the  initiation of translation. It is a basic protein of 115 to 177
  8. amino-acid residues  and  belongs  to a family of ribosomal proteins which, on
  9. the basis of sequence similarities [1,2], groups:

  11.  - Eubacterial S13.
  12.  - Archaebacterial S13.
  13.  - Plant mitochondrial S13.
  14.  - Mammalian and plant S18.
  15.  
  16. As a  signature  pattern,  we  selected  the  best  conserved regions in these
  17. proteins, located in their C-terminal part.
